William Tilton’s journey to the front lines began in Hanover, New Hampshire, where he enlisted to serve during one of the most grueling periods of the Civil War. Though born in Vermont, he represented the Granite State as a member of the 7th New Hampshire Infantry, a unit that saw extensive action in the South.

By 1864, Tilton had risen to the rank of Sergeant. He served with Company C during the Richmond Campaign in Virginia, a series of relentless operations aimed at Crippling the Confederate capital. The fighting during this campaign was characterized by brutal trench warfare and high-stakes maneuvers under constant fire.

It was during these operations in Virginia that Sergeant Tilton distinguished himself through exceptional bravery. His actions on the battlefield were formally recognized with a citation for gallant conduct in the field, a testament to his leadership and resolve during the heavy Union push toward Richmond.
