William the son of Eugene V. Fraser and Frances M. Fraser of Manchester, New Hampshire, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on June 29, 1965, in Boston, Massachusetts. He arrived in Vietnam on September 12, 1967, where he was assigned for duty and served with the 1st Scout Dog platoon, H&S Company, 1st MP Battalion, 1st Force SVC Regiment, FORELOGCMD.

On December 28, the command group, Company I, 3d Battalion, 5th Marines, and attached Company E, 2d Battalion, 3d Marines departed on Operation AUBURN. The Marines landed on Go Noi Island near Ky Lam Tay (1) and immediately began taking fire from the enemy. The firefights would last throughout the day and into the next with numerous casualties. One of the men who was killed in action was Corporal Fraser, attached with his scout dog, he was killed by a sniper.
