Ariman William Frank Sargent / US Airforce

William Frank Sargent was a man defined by the rugged beauty of New England and a steadfast commitment to his country, his faith, and his family. Born in Concord, New Hampshire, in the autumn of 1942, William grew up with the values of hard work and neighborly kindness that would characterize his entire life.

In 1960, freshly graduated from Penacook High School, William felt the call to serve. He enlisted in the United States Air Force, entering service during a pivotal moment in American history. For four years, he served with honor, contributing to the nation’s aerial strength during the height of the Cold War and the onset of the Vietnam era. His time in the Air Force instilled in him a discipline and sense of duty that he carried back to the hills of New Hampshire.

Upon his honorable discharge, William returned to civilian life but never lost his “can-do” spirit. He was a man of the earth and a master of many trades. Whether he was working as a woodsman in the quiet forests, laboring as an oil worker, or building the community as a general contractor, William’s hands were rarely still. He eventually found a long-term calling with the United States Postal Service, where he served his neighbors as a mail carrier, becoming a familiar and friendly face on his daily routes.

In 1968, he began his greatest adventure when he married Lucy Eldridge in Boscawen. Together, they built a life spanning 57 years, rooted in their shared faith at the Church of Christ, where William was a devoted member for over four decades.

William was most at home in the Great Outdoors. He found peace in his garden and joy in traveling—particularly to Nova Scotia, where he connected with his mother’s heritage. To those who knew him in North Haverhill and beyond, William was more than just a veteran or a worker; he was a devoted husband, a father of five, and a grandfather who left behind a legacy of integrity and love.
