T/4 Wayne Ashford / United States Marines

Ashford was sworn in at Manchester on September 5, 1941, and spent almost a year in this country before going overseas. His basic training was at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was then sent to Fort Lewis, Washington, Camp Young, California, and Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania. In August, 1942, he arrived in England with the 752nd Tank Battalion, stationed at Tideworth. In January, 1943, Ashford landed in Oran, Africa, and took part in the push from Tabessa to Tunis. A year later, he went on to Salerno, Italy, and after three months at Eboli, reached the front lines in the push through Rome, Florence, and Bologna. His unit was noted for outstanding performance in the Po Valley Campaign. In July, 1945, Ashford was transferred to the 894th Tank Destroyer Battalion which arrived in the United States in September. He was discharged at Fort Devens September 21, 1945. Ashford is the son of Lila (Nelson) George of Milford. He was born here on April 22, 1917, and graduated from the high school in 1936
