Walter was born in Brunswick, Georgia and entered into active service October 26, 1942. He was stationed in New Caledonia and Guam as an aviation machinist’s mate 2/c. He was honorably discharged on January 24, 1946. After his service he worked as a sign painter and played the trombone in his own band. He moved to New Hampshire in 1974 to Meredith where he continued his sign business. He was married to Marie and they had 3 children and 8 grandchildren, plus many great-grandchildren. He continued to work at sign painting into his ’80s and maintained beautiful vegetable gardens. He was proud of his military service and told long and colorful stories to anyone who would listen. He was dearly loved and will be forever missed. Walter’s headstone is briefly featured in the video at the NH Veterans Heritage Learning Center.
