Virginia B. Hutton, 94, died at the Taylor Home in Laconia on August 14, 2012. She was born on August 10, 1918 in Rochester, Vermont, the daughter of the late Eugene C. and Dorothy (Campbell) Brooks. Ginny grew up in Rochester and Springfield, Vermont. Her family moved to Winchester, Mass. during her senior year and she graduated from high school there. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Middlebury College and later earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Boston State College.

Ginny worked at the Shawmut Bank in Boston for a couple of years and joined the U. S. Marine Corps Women’s Reserve in 1943, serving until 1945. She is believed to be the first female Marine Commissioned Officer to run a Post Exchange in the country, overseeing operations at the PX just outside Washington, D.C. “Ginny” also became certified to teach children with Learning Disabilities and did so for many years, with great skill and compassion, in the Melrose, Mass. School System and at the New Hampton School in New Hampton, N.H.

Ginny married Albert “Red” Hutton, a classmate from Middlebury and a fellow Marine, in 1944. When both had completed their military service, they raised their 3 children in Arlington, Mass. After retiring, they moved to Sanbornton, N.H. and then to a home in the Taylor Community, Laconia, N.H.

NOTE: Because she outranked her husband and felt that he deserved more recognition having fought in the Pacific war zone, she elected to not have her rank on her headstone.
