Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on October 9, 1953, to Walter and Mildred Nelsen, Robert William Nelsen came of age in an era defined by the Cold War and the shadow of the Vietnam War. When many young men faced an uncertain future, Nelsen stepped forward, enlisting in the United States Navy during the height of American naval operations in Southeast Asia.

As an E-2 Seaman Apprentice, Nelsen was part of the essential backbone of the Navy. While senior officers plotted strategy and pilots flew sorties, young sailors like Nelsen held the line on deck. Standing lookout watches, maintaining hull integrity, handling heavy lines during high-stakes underway replenishments, and managing cargo under the watchful eyes of senior Chief Petty Officers, Nelsen ensured his ship stayed combat-ready.

His enlistment coincided with one of the most operationally intense windows in naval history: the strategy of “Vietnamization” and the response to the 1972 Easter Offensive. As American ground troops withdrew, the U.S. Seventh Fleet intensified its sea-lane interdictions, coastal blockades, and shore bombardments along the Vietnamese coast. Floating on continuous duty stations like Yankee Station in the Gulf of Tonkin, the Navy kept pressure on enemy forces. Though a non-rated apprentice preparing to strike for a permanent rate, Nelsen provided the vital physical labor and constant vigilance required to keep those warships afloat and operational. His naval journey culminated in 1973—a historic watershed moment marked by the Paris Peace Accords, the full withdrawal of U.S. forces, and the end of his active duty.

Returning to civilian life, Nelsen channeled his disciplined energy into a wildly different discipline: music. For 15 years, he toured as a professional musician, honing a broad repertoire across multiple genres. Later in life, a profound spiritual conversion reshaped his focus. He dedicated his musical gifts to church ministry, becoming a core presence on local praise teams, while gaining a reputation as an approachable, warmth-filled neighbor who loved to cook and connect with people from all walks of life.

Settling on Ripple Road in Center Barnstead, New Hampshire, Nelsen built a rich family life alongside his wife, Irene. A devoted father, step-father, and grandfather, his family grew to include ten children—Christopher, Nick, Noah, Kathryn, Krystina, Angie, Jennifer, Erica, Jonathan, and Maria—and eleven grandchildren.

In his final years, supported by the care teams at Concord Hospital’s Payson Center and Granite VNA home hospice, Nelsen faced illness with the same quiet grace that defined his life. He passed away peacefully at home on April 20, 2026, surrounded by love.

Interred with military honors at the New Hampshire State Veteran Cemetery in Boscawen, Seaman Robert William Nelsen’s legacy spans from the high-tempo decks of the Vietnam War Navy to the quiet, faithful harmony of a life well lived in service to his family, his community, and his faith.
