1st Lieutenant Phyllis Helena Armstrong / United States Army

Commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps in April, 1945, Phyllis Armstrong received her indoctrination and basic training at Fort Devens. Later, she was assigned to Station Hospital at Camp Edwards, and processed for overseas assignment at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. She served at the 4th General Hospital in Manila and the 117th Station Hospital on Leyte during the fall of 1945. Since December, 1945, she has been on duty at Tilton General Hospital, Fort Dix, New Jersey. Lt. Armstrong is the daughter of Grace Noonan Stewart of Mont Vernon Road, Milford. She attended schools in Braintree, Massachusetts, Sacred Heart Academy in Watertown, Massachusetts, and Commercial High School in Worcester. Her nursing training was obtained at the Waltham Training School for Nurses, where she graduated in 1932. She took a post-graduate course at the Boston Lying-in Hospital and Simmons College. (Boston Lying-In Hospital (BLI) was founded in 1875 to provide care for pregnant women who were “unable to afford in-home medical care.”) Later, she worked at the Newton Hospital, Newton, Massachusetts, then returned to the Waltham Hospital where she was a teaching supervisor in obstetrics. Just before joining the Army Nurse Corps ,she was assistant to the superintendent of nurses at Morton Hospital, Taunton, Massachusetts.
