Preface to the letter written by Philippe Michaud:

‘Nine days after the attack, Pa wrote this letter to his sister, Louise Harris. My father, never one to waste anything, obviously used leftover stationery from Hickam Field, though it was sent from the Schofield Barracks.

Pa told me about what it was like after the attack. First, everyone thought that it was a full-scale invasion and that the bombing raid was just the tip of the iceberg. Because of that belief, troops (Pa included) were stationed at posts on the edge of the jungle “firing bullets into the darkness”.
As we know now, there was no invasion force.

Given the more primitive state of telecommunication and military surveillance in 1941, it is unsurprising that a full-scale invasion was the prevailing belief.’

He wrote a letter years later to *Professor Gordon W. Prange documenting the days surrounding the Pearl Harbor attack.
