Michael Erick Geary of Derry, NH, enlisted in the Marines at the age of 18, shortly after graduating from Pinkerton Academy with the class of 2009.  Michael began preparing for the rigors of the military at age 14, spending his teenage years running and training alongside local recruiters to ensure he was ready for the challenge. Teachers remembered him as a quiet, focused young man who possessed a deep love for his country and an honest desire to seek the truth in all his endeavors.

Mike was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C., fighting in Operation Enduring Freedom.  By the age of 20, he had attained the rank of Lance Corporal. His dedication to his fellow Marines was noted by his family; he frequently passed up opportunities for leave, giving his slots to married Marines with children so they could spend time with their families.

He was killed in action on December 8, 2010, while tasked to take an enemy stronghold in the mountains of Helmand province in southern Afghanistan. Michael was due home in a matter of weeks since he had been deployed since July.

Awards and medals earned by L/Cpl Michael Geary include the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

He had planned to continue his life of service after the military by pursuing a career as a police officer or a border patrol agent.
