Jude Hall – Revolutionary War Veteran

Jude Hall was born into slavery in Kensington, New Hampshire, but earned his freedom through courage and sacrifice on the battlefield. Enlisting in the Continental Army during the American Revolution, he served with distinction in the 2nd and 3rd New Hampshire Regiments.

Hall fought in some of the war’s most pivotal battles. At the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775, he stood with fellow patriots in one of the Revolution’s earliest and most symbolic confrontations. He later engaged in the brutal heat and chaos of the Battle of Monmouth in 1778, and contributed to the critical American victory at the Battle of Saratoga, which helped secure French support for the American cause.

In the later years of the war, Jude Hall also took part in the defense of West Point, helping to safeguard this strategic fort on the Hudson River from British attack.

Serving for over eight years, Jude Hall became a symbol of African American patriotism and resilience. His military service not only helped secure American independence but also won him his personal freedom.

He died in 1827 and is buried in Exeter, New Hampshire. Today, Jude Hall is remembered as a hero who fought for a country that had yet to recognize his full humanity—but whose service helped shape its future.
