Joseph Kimball was born in Littleton, New Hampshire, though his path eventually led him to enlist in the Civil War from Ironton, Ohio. He served as a Private in Company B of the 2nd West Virginia Cavalry, a unit that saw significant action in the final stages of the conflict.

On April 6, 1865, during the Battle of Sailor’s Creek in Virginia, Kimball performed the act of bravery that would define his military record. In the chaos of the engagement, which occurred just days before the surrender at Appomattox, he successfully captured the battle flag of the 6th North Carolina Infantry (C.S.A.).

This feat was recognized as a significant blow to enemy morale and a testament to Kimball’s individual courage. For this action, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration for valor.
