John Marr was born on January 8, 1951, in Thomaston, Maine, to Harold Sr. and Thelma (Nelson) Marr. After enlisting in the Marine Corps, he served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969 and was honorably discharged in 1970.

While raising three young sons and juggling multiple jobs, John pursued higher education at various colleges, ultimately earning an Associate’s Degree. After the birth of his daughter, he transferred to Southern New Hampshire University (then known as NH College), where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Science.

Throughout his career, John held positions at several organizations, including Fisher Engineering, the U.S. Postal Service in both Maine and New Hampshire, Winebaum News, and the Boston Globe. He concluded his professional journey at The New York Times, covering regions from Boston, MA, to Springfield, VA. John retired shortly after the passing of his first wife, Linda, who was also the mother of his children.

John was a dedicated member of various veteran and community organizations. He was a life member of the American Legion in Rollinsford, NH, the Elks Lodge in Rockland, ME, and the VFW in Augusta, ME, as well as the Disabled American Veterans in Loudon, TN. Additionally, he was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus in Rockland, ME.
