Lance Corporal Jedh C. Barker served with honor and distinction as a machine gunner in Company F, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division during the Vietnam War.

On 21 September 1967, while conducting a reconnaissance mission near Con Thien, Barker’s squad was ambushed by heavy enemy sniper fire. Despite being wounded in the initial attack and witnessing severe casualties among his fellow Marines, Barker courageously remained exposed, unleashing accurate and devastating fire on the enemy force. His fearless resistance disrupted their advance and drew the full weight of enemy fire onto his position, yet he steadfastly continued to fight with extraordinary valor.

In the final, decisive moment of the battle, an enemy grenade landed amidst the few surviving Marines. With complete disregard for his own safety, Barker threw himself upon the grenade, absorbing the full force of the blast with his body. Gravely wounded, he nevertheless crawled to a wounded comrade’s side and rendered first aid before succumbing to his injuries.

For his conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, Lance Corporal Barker was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration.

His selfless sacrifice saved the lives of his fellow Marines and stands as a lasting testament to courage, devotion, and honor. Lance Corporal Jedh C. Barker’s legacy reflects the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
