Captain Herbert Lewis Adams / United States Army

An early entrant into the conflict, Adams was sworn in on April 30, 1942, and after basic training at Fort Eustis, Virginia, he attended Officer Candidate School at Camp Davis, North Carolina. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in October of that year and became a first lieutenant in April 1943. While at Camp Davis, he married Miss Dorothy Mahoney of Milford on February 12, 1943, at Carolina Beach. He departed for India on May 10, 1943, with the 464th Coast Artillery Anti-Aircraft Battalion, arriving in Bombay. His unit was sent through Calcutta to protect the Ledo Road. In August 1944, his battalion moved to an airfield at Poashan, China, where they remained for nine months. Adams was detached in May at Kanchrapara and assigned to the 969th Quartermaster Detachment at Chabau, India, sending supplies into China. He returned to the United States on December 17, 1945, and is now a captain in the A.U.S. Officers’ Reserve. Adams is the son of Lewis and Annie (Keane) Adams of Milford, born here on August 11, 1918. He graduated from high school in 1937 and from the University of New Hampshire in 1941. He was employed by the Coca-Cola Company of Portland, Maine, when he entered the Army.
