George P. Dow was born in Atkinson, New Hampshire, and was residing in Manchester when he answered the call to serve during the American Civil War. He mustered into the 7th New Hampshire Infantry, a regiment known for its heavy involvement in the campaigns along the Atlantic coast and the eventual push toward the Confederate capital.

By the autumn of 1864, Dow had risen to the rank of Sergeant within Company C. During the Richmond-Petersburg Campaign, his leadership was put to the ultimate test. In October 1864, while conducting a high-stakes reconnaissance mission near Richmond, Virginia, Dow found himself in command of his entire company.

His actions during this engagement were marked by exceptional bravery under fire. For his gallantry while leading his men during the reconnaissance toward the enemy’s defenses, he was later recognized with the nation’s highest military honor.
