George Frank Robie was born on June 17, 1844, in Candia, New Hampshire, and later lived in Manchester. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, he first served briefly with the 8th Massachusetts Infantry. He evidently answered the call once more, enlisting in Company D of the 7th New Hampshire Infantry.

By September 1864, while serving as a sergeant on the skirmish line before Richmond, Virginia, Robie displayed conspicuous gallantry under fire. His actions during this reconnaissance toward Richmond earned him the U.S. Army’s highest honor: the Medal of Honor. The official citation simply reads: “Gallantry on the skirmish line.”

After his act of valor, Robie was commissioned as a First Lieutenant on October 28, 1864. He served through the remainder of the war and was mustered out on July 20, 1865, at Goldsboro, North Carolina.

Following the war, Robie eventually relocated to Galveston, Texas, where he died on June 5, 1891. He is buried in New City Cemetery in Galveston.
