T/5 Dexter Appleford / United States Army

A resident of Milford since October, 1932, when he married the former Evelyn Wheeler of this town, Dexter Appleford is a native of Hanover, Massachusetts. He was born August 25, 1907, the son of James and Ethel (Thayer) Appleford.

He was employed by the University of New Hampshire in its printing and duplicating department when he entered military service on June 17, 1943.
Appleford went to Camp Carson, Colorado, for basic training, and was assigned to the 168th Engineer Combat Battalion, Company C. After maneuvers in Tennessee, he went overseas to England, May 3, 1944. He was stationed at Wrexham, Wales, until he went to Normandy July 17, 1944. He saw action in France and Germany. Duties also carried him to Luxembourg, Belgium, and Holland. He sailed from Marseille October 27, 1945, and was discharged at Fort Devens, November 17, 1945. Appleford attended schools in Rockland, Massachusetts, and graduated from the high school there in 1926.
