David Leroy Newton was born on December 26, 1940, in Haverhill, Massachusetts. After graduating from Haverhill Trade High School and beginning a career in sheet metal fabrication, he entered military service at the age of 20.

In 1961, Newton joined the United States Navy. During his four years of active duty, he utilized his civilian training as an Aviation Metalsmith. He served as an aircrew member and earned his Gold Wings as a qualified aircraft mechanic. Notably, he was a member of the Hurricane Hunters, flying into tropical storms to gather meteorological data. Following his active duty tour, he served an additional two years in the Navy Reserves.

After a period of civilian life, during which he operated his own fabrication business and served as a volunteer firefighter, Newton returned to military service in 1980. He joined the Massachusetts National Guard, serving with the 101st Combat Engineers based out of Newburyport. He dedicated 18 years to the National Guard, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant before concluding his military career.

In his later years, Newton was a resident of Farmington, New Hampshire. He remained active in the veteran community as a member of several American Legion posts and the VFW. He passed away at his home on March 4, 2026.
