The Service of Sergeant Chris Carr

Chris Carr (born Christos Karaberis) was born and raised in Manchester, New Hampshire. He entered the U.S. Army from his hometown and was assigned to Company L, 337th Infantry, 85th Infantry Division. By the autumn of 1944, Carr held the rank of Sergeant and was deployed to the Mediterranean Theater during the Italian Campaign of World War II.

On October 1, 1944, Sergeant Carr’s unit was tasked with capturing the Casoni di Remagna near Guignola, Italy. As the company moved toward the objective, they were pinned down by a sophisticated network of German defenses, including mortars and machine guns. Carr voluntarily moved ahead of his squad to scout the terrain and began a solo assault on the enemy positions to break the stalemate.

In his first encounter, Carr bypassed deadly fire to surprise an enemy stronghold, capturing eight prisoners single-handedly. Without pausing, he moved toward a second machine gun nest. Despite being spotted and fired upon directly, he charged the position, killing four defenders and capturing the survivor.

Carr continued his advance toward a third machine gun. He used a combination of aggressive fire and a “nerve-shattering shout” to overwhelm the crew, leading to the immediate surrender of four more enemy soldiers. His momentum carried him toward two additional machine guns that were actively firing on his company. He neutralized the first, killing four and capturing three, which caused the six defenders in the final position to surrender out of fear.

By the end of his one-man sweep, Sergeant Carr had cleared the ridge leading to the battalion’s objective. His actions resulted in the capture of five machine gun positions, eight enemy combatants killed, and 22 prisoners taken. His bravery allowed his battalion to occupy the commanding ground necessary for the regional advance. For these actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.
